Sister Joan Lang, R.S.M.

Sister Joan Lang, 90, a Sister of Mercy in Chicago, IL, died at The Little Company of Mary Hospital in Chicago on January 6, 2021. She had recently resided at Mercy Circle in Chicago, IL.

Sister Joan Lang was born on April 23, 1930, to Sylvester and Anna Oetker Lang, in Marshalltown, Iowa. After graduating from St. Mary’s High School, she worked at Fisher Governor Company until 1955. She then attended Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa. After one year there, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in Chicago. She earned a B.A. in Elementary Education from St. Xavier College in Chicago in 1964 and a Masters of Science in Curriculum and Supervision from Northern Illinois University in De Kalb, IL in 1973. She taught all grades from first through eighth and was a school administrator.

Sister Joan was preceded in death by her parents and was the last of 15 siblings. One of her sisters, Sister Mary Avellino, was also a Sister of Mercy in Chicago. Sister Joan Lang leaves many relatives who treasure their fond memories of her.

The private funeral for Sister Joan Lang will take place on Tuesday, January 12, at the Cemetery of the Holy Sepluchre in Alsip, IL.
