Vera Rae Bannon, 69, of Marshalltown, passed away on Friday, May 28, 2021 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown.
Graveside memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 7th, 2021 at the Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown with Pastor Rod Bradley of the True Bible Baptist Church officiating. There will be a luncheon with the family after the graveside service and will be held at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home hospitality room. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her memory may be directed to Iowa River Hospice, True Bible Baptist Church in Des Moines or the American Cancer Society Russell and Ann Gerdin Hope Lodge in Iowa City. Vera Bannon was born on September 6, 1951 in Marshalltown to Wayne Bannon Sr. and Homzel Johnson. Vera graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1969 and then went to Marshalltown Community College and DMACC in Des Moines to continue her education. Vera had worked at Nationwide Insurance in Des Moines and most recently at Goodwill in Des Moines. She was a faithful member of the True Bible Baptist Church in Des Moines and enjoyed being involved with the women’s fellowship ministry and the feeding committee. She was also a previous member of the National Association of Colored Women’s Club.
Vera had resided in Des Moines for 48 years where she was employed in the insurance field. She worked at Nationwide for 18 years, in sales at Goodwill and later returned with her sister to their hometown. She enjoyed taking classes to learn new hobbies such as floral arranging, cake decorating and crocheting. She enjoyed traveling, going to the movies, concerts and attending the Des Moines Metro Opera. She liked trying new experiences such as skiing and horseback riding.
Vera is survived by her siblings: Judy Bannon of Marshalltown, twin sister and best friend, Vivian Bannon of Marshalltown and Wayne Bannon Jr. of Memphis, Tennessee. She is also survived by her nephew, Brian Bannon, who she loved and was very proud of and numerous cousins and her church family and friends.
Vera is preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Homzel; sister-in-law, Geraldine Bannon and her grandparents: Galloway and Luella Johnson and William and Eva Bannon.
