Born on December 23, 1924 in Strawberry Point, IA, Nick was the son of Floyd and Verna (Heyer) Knickerbocker. He grew up on the family farm near Edgewood and graduated from Edgewood High School. He was inducted into the United States Army following graduation and faithfully served our country during World War II as a rifleman receiving a Bronze Star and Purple Heart before being honorably discharged. On November 18, 1951, he was united in marriage to Mary Helen Van Dusen in Vail, IA. The couple lived in Newton, Perry and Carroll before moving to Marshalltown in 1966. Nick worked as a bookkeeper for Pat Manning Chevrolet before becoming a licensed insurance agent. Throughout his career as an insurance agent he worked for Farmland Mutual Insurance Company where he earned several awards as a top agent. Later he opened his own independent insurance agency, Silent K Insurance. He had been an active member of the First United Methodist Church where he enjoyed being a greeter and an usher. He also had belonged to the American Legion and the Elks Lodge. In addition to spending time with his family, Nick loved to golf, watch westerns, play cards and make people laugh. He enjoyed simple pleasures–sitting in the sun, listening to his windchime, a chocolate cookie or candy bar was sure to put a smile on his face.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of nearly seventy years, Mary Helen; his children: Mary Lynn Knickerbocker, Steve (Kathy) Knickerbocker, Clark (Carol) Knickerbocker, Ann (Ed) Seuferer and Lana Knickerbocker; his grandchildren; Elizabeth Knickerbocker, Kristine Mason, Julianne Mason, Andrew Knickerbocker, Sydney Seuferer and Taylor (Josh) Bear; six great grandchildren and sister Marjorie Perrinjaquet.

In eternal life, Nick has been reunited with his parents, Floyd and Verna, and his siblings: Donna, Doris, Bruce, Wilma and Alfred.
