Herschel “Shorty” Edwards, 88, of Marshalltown, passed away Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at Southridge Specialty Care. In accordance with his wishes, cremation rites will be given and no services are being planned. Memorial contributions may be directed to his family for a later designation. Born on April 21, 1933 in Ewert, IA, Herschel Eugene Edwards was the son of Byard and Catherine (Stafford) Edwards. He grew up on a farm south of Grinnell and graduated from the Grinnell High School. On December 12, 1952, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Ann Nichols at the Baptist Temple in Marshalltown. Shorty worked helping several farmers with their operations north of the Beaman-Conrad area. He had been employed at Lennox Industries, Fisher Controls and Bruin Manufacturing. Later, he became a nurse’s aide and utility worker at the Iowa Veterans Home before his retirement. He had been a Boy Scouts leader and had coached in the Marshalltown Little League. Shorty enjoyed anything to do with sports. He played basketball, played in softball leagues and even taught bowling. He loved bicycling and even rode in RAGBRAI.
Those left to cherish his memory are: his wife of nearly seventy years, Marilyn; his children: Charles “Chuck”, James (Gina), Richard, Terry and Larry Edwards; ten grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and one great, great grandson.
In eternal life, Shorty has been reunited with his parents; his sons, Chuck and Terry; three sisters: Marjorie, Violet and Elvira; and two brothers, Francis and Paul.
