Robert “Bob” Joseph Buchwald, 85

Robert “Bob” Joseph Buchwald, 85, of Des Moines, IA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at his home after a long illness surrounded by his loved ones.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden, IA with Pastor Alan Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery in Glidden.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. at Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden on Tuesday, January 25, 2022.

Bob, the son of John and Margaret (Burns) Buchwald, was born August 24, 1936, in Marshalltown, IA. He attended St. Mary’s High School in Marshalltown graduating with the Class of 1954. After graduation, Bob began a successful career in accounting in the meat packing industry that took him too many locations throughout the country and around the world. On October 17, 1964, he was united in marriage to Alberta Janssen at Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden. When Bob retired in 1999, Bob and Alberta took up full time RVing for nine years before settling in Branson, MO. In 2019, the couple moved to Des Moines to be closer to family as Bob’s health started to deteriorate. Bob was an avid woodworker and carver. He enjoyed going on walks, golfing, fishing with his grandchildren, but most of all spending quality time with all his family.

Bob is survived by his wife of 57 years, Alberta Buchwald, of Des Moines, IA; his children: Teri (Mike) Jahn, of Lee Center, IL, Tom Ireland, of Burnsville, MS, Tim Ireland, of Milford, IA, Ted Ireland, of Spirit Lake, IA, John Buchwald, of Davis, IL, and Judy Buchwald, of Wichita, KS; 20 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; his brother David (Carole) Buchwald, of Tucson, AZ; his brother-in-law Stan (Lora) Janssen, of Coon Rapids, IA; his sister-in-law Mary Ann (Richard) Courtney, of Osceola, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and his brother William “Bill” (Mary) Buchwald.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations sent to the Unity Point Hospice-Des Moines.
