He was a certified VA service officer, aiding veterans in receiving VA benefits. He was also a certified service officer for the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Viet Nam Veterans of America and the Disabled American Veterans.

Ron was a civic-minded person and served in many organizations: being a past president of Toastmaster International, Kiwanis International and the Iowa branch of the National League of Postmasters. He also served as a lieutenant governor for Nebraska/Iowa division of Kiwanis International. For the years 2010-2011 he was named Member of the Year for the Marshalltown Matins Kiwanis Club. Ron was also a political activist, serving as the Democratic Marshall County chairperson and also running for office as Marshall County Supervisor and Marshall County Auditor. He was awarded the Governor’s Volunteer Award for his service work with veterans. He was a member for many years at First United Methodist Church of Marshalltown. Ron was also a life member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association and a faithful, loyal and dedicated Hawkeye.

Ron had joined the United States Marine Corps (Korean War era) and after high school graduation, he went on active duty. He then served in the Marine Corps Reserve until 1995 when he retired. He retired at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer (CWO4). Burial will be with full military honors provided by the combined VFW/American Legion of the surrounding area.

After his initial military service, he returned to Des Moines and met Yvonne Cecile Miller, a 1956 graduate of East High. They were joined in marriage on December 5, 1959, and until her death on September 11, 2012 after 52 years of marriage. They were blessed with one daughter, three grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Before his death, he had a loving relationship with Kathryn Wisecarver, of State Center, Iowa, for many years. She was a devoted caregiver in his final years.
