Dorothy M. Atkinson, 91, of Wichita, KS, formerly of Marshalltown, IA, passed away Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Larksfield Health Center in Wichita joining her late husband Glenn, in God’s palatial mansion. St. Peter did not need to check her credentials, as she was the most pious Catholic other than Mother Teresa. Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 17, 2023, at St. Francis of Assisi – St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marshalltown. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. until the time of the services. Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery. Concluding the committal service, a luncheon will be held at the Elmwood Country Club. In lieu of flowers memorial may be directed to St. Francis of Assisi. The mass of Christian burial will be live-streamed on the Anderson Funeral Homes Facebook Page. Dorothy was born August 31, 1931, to Wilbur and Celestine Kopel. She was the third of eight. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1949. She then graduated from Marycrest College with her degree in Education and began her teaching career in Green Mountain. Dorothy and Glenn were united in marriage June 15, 1957. They were then blessed with three children Mark, in 1963, Mary, in 1965 and Ann, in 1967. Dorothy gave up her teaching career to be a fulltime mother. She was very active in church activities at St. Mary’s. Dorothy also volunteered her time to various boards and committees including the Assistance League, P.E.O., YMCA, Fisher Community Center and Meals on Wheels to name a few. She was very generous with her time and seldom turned down a request to serve. Dorothy and Glenn were longtime members at Elmwood Country Club enjoying an active social life of golf, tennis and swimming.
Dorothy is survived by her three children; Mark (Carol) Atkinson, Mary (Russ) Wilkins, Ann (Chris) Muehling, grandchildren; Patrick, Maddie, Elizabeth, Carter, Ben, Sam and siblings; Jeanette, Isabelle, Jim and Kathy.
She was preceded in death her husband Glenn in 2014, and her siblings: Eldon, Luella and Barbara.
