Vivian “Viv” Tompkins, 91

Vivian “Viv” Tompkins, 91, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away surrounded by her loving family on the evening of Wednesday, August 30. 2023, at the Iowa River Hospice Home.

A private graveside service for Viv will be held at Riverside Cemetery where she will be laid to rest. A family-led celebration of life will take place at a later date to be announced. Vivian May Clark was born September 30, 1931, to parents Joseph and Ora (Kingery) Clark in Monroe, Iowa. She was the second oldest of 8 children in her family. In early years of her life, Viv lived in Monroe, Iowa, until her family moved to Marshalltown where she attended school and later graduated high school in the class of 1949.

On March 16, 1963, Viv was united in marriage to Jack Tompkins in Minnesota. Together with her children from a previous marriage she had 7 children and Jack and Viv raised them together. Throughout the years, Viv worked at different places in Marshalltown which included Strands Bakery, Fishers, Cecils Cafe and Hy-Vee. She and Jack were owners and operators of Brewsters Bar in Marshalltown.

Viv loved her clubs and belonged to the Red Hat Ladies Club and T.O.P.S. (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly). In her free time, she loved to work on puzzles, tend to her flower gardens, mow the yard, travel with friends and family, and would not miss an episode of General Hospital. Family was important to Viv and she was known in her family to cook every Sunday and host the weekly family dinner and holidays.

She is survived by her children: Pam (Floyd) Shannon, Nancy Whittlesey, Linda Weishaubt, Hoss (Jill) Tompkins, Rochelle Blackford, Roxanne (Larry) Catherwood and Duke Tompkins; her grandchildren: Ronald Shannon, Chrystal Shannon, JR Head, Angie Christensen, Amy Head, Davey Weishaubt, Vivian (Ben) Wertzberger, Bobby Weishaubt, Cassidy Tompkins, Alyssa Tompkins, Taylor Kensler, Dallas Blackford, Jacob Catherwood, Lucas Catherwood, Sidney Catherwood, Travis (Amber) Tompkins, Natasha (Derek) Gaydos and Lachelle Tompkins; 23 great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; her siblings: Marlene (Johnny) Sears, Darlene (Dennis) Coleman and Bonnie Davis and sisters-in-law Diana Clark and Sharon Clark; alongside numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband Jack Tompkins; her daughter Jackie Whittlesey; her granddaughter Emma Tompkins; her great granddaughter Hanna Shannon; her parents Joseph and Ora Clark; and her siblings Bob Clark, Philip Clark, Donny Clark and Jerry Clark.
