Jon David Ward, 78

Jon David Ward, 78, born in Marshalltown, Iowa, entered into eternal rest September 30, at the Baylor Scott and White heart hospital in Dallas, TX. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 30, to Wiley and Maxine Ward. He was the youngest of three with older brother Phil and sister Sally. His current residence was in Las Cruces, NM.

Jon grew up in Marshalltown, IA, attending Woodbury Elementary until 7th grade when his family moved to State Center where he graduated from high school in 1962. He attended the University of Northern lowa and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1969. He then furthered his studies at Illinois State University and earned a Master of Business Administration in 1973.

Jon worked at State Farm Insurance headquarters in Bloomington, IL, for 38 years as an internal auditor. He became audit director in 1987. The highlight of his career was in 1990 when he co-authored “Computer Fraud Auditing: It Works” in the Internal Auditor Journal, which garnered the 1991 John B. Thurston Award from the Institute of Internal Auditors.

Jon was a court-appointed special advocate for the Child Protection Network and Children’s Advocacy Center between 1997 and 2001, and from 2010 to 2013, Jon served as a member of the Dona Ana County Audit Committee. In recognition of his contribution to the field, Jon was featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who’s Who among professionals. When Jon retired, he and his current wife Debra moved to Las Cruces, NM to enjoy the next chapter of life.

Jon has always enjoyed playing and watching sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. In high school his favorite sport was baseball. Other hobbies included racquetball, tennis, running, hiking and traveling. He was also an avid coin collector and had quite the collection. His favorite hobby was his family, making time to attend family events and holidays and spending time with grandchildren and traveling together.

Jon married his high school sweetheart Judy and lived in Marshalltown Iowa before moving to Cedar Falls. Jon had three children with Judy. Daughter Wendy and her children Shantelle and Danielle. Son Stacey, daughter in-law Beth, and their children Lauren and Lia. Daughter Christine LaGuardia, son in-law Larry, and their children L.J. and Gianna. He is also survived by his sister in-law Joanne Ward and brother in-law Jack Kennison.

He was preceded in death by his parents Maxine Culbertson and Wiley; his brother Phil and sister Sally Lively Hymer; his first wife Judy and in-laws C.F. and Ruth Kennison; and his daughter Wendy and twin grandsons Austin and Michael from son Stacey.

Everyone who knew Jon referred to him as “the nice guy.” He truly was a great man whose impact will be forever felt by his family who loves him dearly.

Funeral services will be held in Marshalltown, Iowa. He is to be buried next to his first wife Judy. Judy preceded Jon in death 45 years ago. Services will be held at a future date to be announced. Memorial donations may be made directly in his name to the American Cancer Society.
