Jean Marie was born February 27, 1940, to Earl and Golda (Long) Eichorn in Marshalltown. She attended school in Marshalltown, graduating with the class of 1958. Growing up, she was a trampolinist traveling the state performing shows and was best known for being a “Dare Devil of the Trampoline.” At the last class reunion she attended, Jean’s athleticism was still being touted. Jean met Lee Garrett and they later married on August 20, 1960, in Marshalltown. The two made their home in rural Marshalltown where they built a farm and raised their family. For many years Jean worked for Marshalltown Trowell factory and Fisher Controls in the executive kitchen. Lee and Jean began Pork N More Catering in 1988 and spent the next 15 years devoting their time to the restaurant and catering and were proud to use many of her Aunt Ruth’s recipes. The two loved to work and loved to work together. One of the most rewarding experiences in their life was when they tended to the needs of those affected by Hurricane Katrina as part of the Habitat for Humanity program. They were the definition of best friends, and spent many years traveling, especially to Florida. Most of their travels were done by camper, including Alaska, Iowa Hawkeye football games and many NASCAR races. Lee and Jean were avid Iowa State Fair campers, never missing a fair until Lee’s passing in 2018. If you knew Jean, you know there wasn’t much that could slow her down. She was a devoted member of the Marshall County Pork Producers for several years. Jean also was a part of the Porkette’s and served as president. Jean considered the greatest part of her life to be Lee, and as her family would say, she didn’t like to share him with anyone! The way to her heart was Pepsi and chocolate, and the love for chocolate was passed down to several family members. Jean will be missed for her quick humor, foul mouth, cooking and storytelling, but it’s so comforting to know she is reunited with Lee.
Jean is survived by two daughters, Denise Bacon, of Marshalltown, Linda (David) Kuhl, of Beaman, IA, five grandchildren: Amanda Tuttle, of Girdwood, AK, Travis (April) Storjohann, of Albion, IA Susie (Bryan) Fiscus, of Marion, IA, Thomas (Olivia) Kuhl, of Gladbrook, IA, Benjamin (Lindsay) Kuhl, of Conrad, IA; three great-grandchildren: Parker and Mason Fiscus and Lennon Kuhl; one sister, Joanne Steinberg; one sister-in-law, Barb Garrett; numerous nieces and nephews, and her beloved dog, Casper.
