Helen Lang
It is with great sadness the family of Helen Lang announces her passing on January 8, 2024, at age 94. She died at home under the care of hospice and her family. A visitation will be held Monday, January 15, 2024, at Abels Funeral & Cremation Service – Engelkes Chapel in Grundy Center. A Mass of Christian Burial is on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in rural Reinbeck with interment at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center.
Helen was born August 29, 1929, in Farley, Iowa, to Mathias and Cecelia (Klaas) Thiltgen. She moved to Marshalltown in 1950 after meeting the love of her life, George C. Lang, at her cousin’s wedding. Helen and George were married March 27, 1951, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Farley and began their family of 5 children, 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Helen worked as secretary of Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Dubuque, secretary at Midwest Floral Co. of Marshalltown, checkout at Hooks Grocery, and salesperson at JC Penney and Frederick Furniture all in Grundy Center. She was the organist for Sacred Heart Church for many years.
She enjoyed playing organ and piano, crocheting, sewing, baking homemade bread, and being a mom and putting a smile on all her children and grandchildren’s faces.
She will be missed by her children: Paul (Carol) Lang, of Champaign, IL, Tom (Rosemary) Lang, of Grundy Center, Virginia Dietiker, of Grundy Center, Robert (Shirley) Lang, of Grundy Center, and Walter (Dawn) Lang, of LeGrand.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 2002, her parents, 2 sisters and 4 brothers.
