Donald (“Don”) Richard Geerdes, a life-long resident of Grundy County, IA, passed away at his home in Wellsburg on February 6, 2024 at the age of 82. Don was born on June 30, 1941, in rural Eldora, Melrose Township, to Gratus and Ruth (Doyle) Geerdes and attended Wellsburg Community School. Before graduating high school, Don served in the Army and was stationed for a time in Germany, after which he returned home and completed his high school degree. Shortly after, he met Ardella Thede and they were married on June 28, 1969, in Gladbrook, IA. Don worked at Fisher Governor in Marshalltown, IA from his return from the service through his retirement. He had a passion for motorcycles, tractors, cars, racing, and traveling with Ardella, and they would often drive their motorhome to Texas during the colder winter months. He was a man of few words, but he was never short on interesting stories about the past that often ended in a hearty laugh. Don is preceded in death by his parents, Gratus and Ruth, and his wife, Ardella. He is survived by his brother-in-law, Stanley (Vivian) Bethusen, his nephew, Andrew (Chie) Berthusen, and his great-neice, Nari Berthusen (12). Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 AM on Monday, February 12, 2024, with a funeral service to follow directly at 11:00 AM. The visitation and service will be held at Peace United Church of Christ, 201 Johnston St., Gladbrook, IA. After the service, Don will be laid to rest in the Steamboat Rock cemetery, next to his wife Ardella, in Steamboat Rock, IA. Anderson Funeral Homes have been entrusted with arrangements.
