Randall J Swanson

Randall “Randy” Jay Swanson, 67, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and resident of the West Des Moines community, passed away peacefully on April 23rd, after bravely battling ALS. He was surrounded by love in the comfort of his home.

Born on September 28, 1956, in Marshalltown Iowa, Randy was the youngest child of Lewis and Janice (Norder) Swanson. Randy attended Marshalltown High School and went on to graduate from the University of Northern Iowa in 1980 with a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Arts Education. On June 9, 1984, Randy exchanged vows with the love of his life, Marcia Wadle. Their journey as a couple blossomed with the arrivals of their children; Jeremy in 1985, Nicholas in 1987 and Kacie in 1988.

Professionally, Randy dedicated his talents and skills through his own construction business where he left a lasting mark through his hard work, integrity and commitment. His customers, employees and peers, remember him for his expertise and kindness. His customers enjoyed working with him so much he often became a “member” of their families.

Beyond his professional life, Randy was a man of diverse interests and passions. He found joy in the great outdoors, whether it was hiking trails or exploring the depths of the ocean through scuba diving. He enjoyed traveling and was an adventurous man – often pushing Marcia beyond her comfort zone. Randy's creative spirit spilled over into his personal life through his many building projects and hobbies. He left a legacy for his family through the homes he built or remodeled to the pieces of furniture that grace his home. Above all else, Randy cherished moments spent with his children and their families, especially his five grandchildren.

In 2022, Randy faced his greatest challenge when he was diagnosed with ALS. Despite the adversity, Randy approached his illness with grace and resilience. He never allowed his circumstances to dim his light or dampen his optimism, inspiring all who knew him with his courage and strength. Randy's legacy of love, kindness and tenacity will forever endure in the hearts of those who were privileged to know him.

Randy is survived by his loving wife, Marcia Swanson; his children, Jeremy (Megan) Swanson of Cedar Falls, Nicholas (Ashley) Swanson of Cedar Falls, and Kacie (Brian) Lewis of Grimes; his cherished grandchildren Junior, Sadie, Gabby, Lewis and Dexter; his siblings Richard (Maria) Swanson of Albuquerque and Nancy (Larry) Reilly of Waterloo, Marcia's family Larry and Patty Wadle, Janet (Chris) Kubik, Teresa (Ron) King, Becky (Bret) Bussanmas and Christy (Don) Newbury along with a host of many other family members and friends who will carry his spirit forward. Randy was preceeded in death by his parents.

Marcia would like to thank all of their friends and family members – especially her and Randy's siblings and parents. They all provided love and support from the beginning. She'd also like to thank the ALS Association and Unity Point Hospice for their care and support. These two organizations made navigating the final months of Randy's life more comfortable.

A celebration of Randy's life will be held June 2, at Summerset Winery in Indianola from 12:30 – 3:30. The euology will be given at 1:30.
