Evelyn Bruster
Evelyn Kouba Bruster of LeGrand, IA passed away Monday, July 22, 2024, at Iowa River Hospice in Marshalltown at the age of 103 years, 7 months, and 2 days. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 27, 2024, at Anderson Funeral Homes in Marshalltown. Visitation will take place 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, July 26, 2024, at Anderson Funeral Homes in Marshalltown. Interment will follow services at Iowa River Church of the Brethren Cemetery in rural Marshalltown. Online condolences may be sent to www.andersonfhs.com.
Evelyn was born December 20, 1920, at the family farm in rural Tama County, northeast of LeGrand. She was the fourth of six children born to Peter and Velma Lamer Kouba. She was educated for eight years at rural Indian Village #6 school and graduated from LeGrand High School in 1938.
On June 6, 1941, she was united in marriage to William Douglas Bruster of Marshalltown by Rev. Eby at the parsonage of the Iowa River Church of the Brethren.
They resided in Marshalltown until he was drafted into the army in 1942. She was with him during his military training in Colorado Springs, CO (Camp Carson), Green Cove Springs, FL (Camp Blanding), Little Rock, AK (Camp Robinson), and Newton, AL (Camp Rucker). When he was sent to Germany she lived with her parents where their first child, Douglas, was born in January of 1945.
When her husband was honorably discharged and returned from France in December of 1945, they made their home again in Marshalltown for five years until moving to a farm northwest of Montour, IA. They farmed for 17 years, and in 1967 they built a home in LeGrand.
Evelyn’s passion was sketching and oil painting. She enjoyed watching all sports, walking, card playing, and the members of the 500 Club of LeGrand. She cherished her family and their times spent together.
She was baptized at Grace Brethren Church in Waterloo, IA and was a member of the Iowa River Church of the Brethren of rural Marshalltown.
Left to cherish Evelyn’s memory are three children; Douglas R (Sharon) Bruster of Iron River, MI, Susan D. Eckard of Stanberry, MO, and Julie Cermak of Carlisle, IA, seven grandchildren; Deidre (Scott) Tasler or Bristow, VA, Jessica Copley of Cedar Rapids, IA, Blake (Sidney) Eckard of Stanberry, MO, Natasha (Tom) Hammond of Alexandria, VA, Ashleigh (BJ) Mingst of Waukee, IA, Alison (Jason) Eernisse of Ames, IA, and Adriana Elmore of Carlisle, IA, two step-grandchildren; Brooke (Marc) Lallaman of Portland, OR and Scott (Leslie) Jones of Kansas City, MO, 14 great-grandchildren; Zachary (Melannie), Clay, and Paige Tasler, Evan, Amelia, and Gabriel Copley, Blanche, Harlan, and Goldie Eckard, Tatum, Knox, and Hudson Hammond, Emerson Eernisse, and Eden Mingst, and two great-great-grandchildren; Hayden and Esmeralda Tasler.
