Maxine Catherine Liston

Maxine Catherine Liston, 92, passed away peacefully on September 5 under Hospice care at Arbor Springs in West Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at St. Francis of Assisi/St. Henry’s Catholic Church, 211 W. Olive Street in Marshalltown on October 18 at 10:30 a.m.

Maxine was born April 8, 1932 in Haverhill, Iowa to John and Augusta Edel. She married George Liston on July 11, 1953 at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Marshalltown.

The first forty years of her married life, Maxine lived primarily south of Nevada, where George farmed and raised cattle. She enjoyed her childrens' school and team sports events, mushrooming in the timber, bridge and 500 card games, and parish activity at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Retirement provided twenty years of active living in Marshalltown where she and George continued to enjoy family adventures with siblings and cards at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Many family stories evolved from frequent trips “going east”–code for heading to The Mesquaki Casino where she and her sister were on a first name basis with many. She was a proud member of St. Henry’s Catholic Church.

Maxine will be remembered for her focus on faith and family and her ability to find joy in most any situation. She is survived by her sister, Jeanette Loney of Marshalltown; sons Steven (Gwen) of Waukee, John (Sonya) of Tampa, FL, and Patrick (Marianne) of Clive; and daughter Joni (John Grosso) of Charlotte, NC; eight grand-children; and nine great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, George.

The family deeply appreciates the loving care mom received at Martina Place in Johnston and the countless individuals at Arbor Springs and Suncrest Hospice for their care during the final week of her life. Memorials can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, act.alz.org.

Starting at $4.38/week.
