Shirley was born November 25, 1930, on a farm east of Iowa Falls, IA. Her parents were Lewis and Florence (Boyenga) Beurer. Shirley’s early education was in a one-room schoolhouse one mile north of Cleves, IA. She attended grades 1 through 8, and then went to Ackley, IA for high school, graduating in May of 1947. She attended Ellsworth college in Iowa Falls for one semester and then went to work at Citizen State Bank in Iowa Falls as secretary/teller. On October 29, 1949, she married Robert (Bob) Nott at her church in Ackley. The couple made their home in Iowa Falls. When the couple began their family (a girl in May of 1952 and a boy in December of 1953), Shirley decided to become a stay-at-home full-time mom, so she retired from Banking. The family moved to Marshalltown in June of 1966. Once the children were older, she began working half days, first at Tempo department store in the office and later at J. C. Penny catalogue department. In June of 1976 she started work for the adult education department of Marshalltown Community College. She retired from that job on March 1, 1986. In retirement, she and Bob toured in their motor home and visited all 48 contiguous states, as well as Alaska (twice) and all the Canadian provinces. Winters were spent in the motor home at a resort in San Diego, CA. In 2004 they bought a park model home in a resort in Yuma, AZ. Keeping it till Covid forced them to sell and “retire” to Marshalltown. Shirley enjoyed playing bridge and Texas-hold-em; she was a good bowler in her younger days and was an excellent fisherman, spending a large amount of time fishing on remote fly-in lakes in Canada.

Surviving is her husband of 75 years, Bob, daughter Linda (Dave) Lampel of Winterset, IA, son David (Terri) Nott of San Diego, CA, brother Harold Beurer of Cedar Falls, IA, sister-in-law Mary Harms of Alden, IA, and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends wherever she went.
