Carole Steckelberg

Carole Ann Sizelove Steckelberg was born September 3rd, 1941 in South Gate California to Lewis Thomas and Betty Jean (Davis) Sizelove. She died unexpectedly on May 8th 2025 in the comfort of her beautiful home. She was raised in California for her youth, moving to Iowa for her senior year of high school graduating from Union Whitten High School in 1959. There, she met and married her high school sweetheart Tom (Tommy Matney). From this union they had four children. Shawn (Steve) Meyer, State Center IA, Stace (Vanessia) Matney, Teri (Dennis) Plants, Madrid IA, and Christopher Matney, Omaha, NE.
Following the dissolution of this marriage, Carole spent many years waiting to find the true love of her life Dr. Arvin Steckelberg. While their years together weren’t near long enough, they were full of love, travel and enjoying the Wisconsin Lakehouse. With the marriage to Arvin, we became an even larger family joining forces with his children, Sue (Royce) Belzung, Sandy (Bob) Hogle, Jill Schiltz, Kurt (Darci) Steckelberg, Mark (deceased) Carolyn Steckelberg. Carole was employed with the Marshalltown Hospital (which changed names many times during her career) until she retired, and later was a volunteer at the hospital. She was a hard worker during her years before Arvin. She waitressed and bartended at the Fox II lounge (wearing the fanciest of dresses), The Board of Trade, all while still maintaining her day job. We aren’t sure when she slept, but the lights were on and there was a roof over our heads. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 20th Century Club, at least 2 book clubs, never convincing both to read the same book at the same time. She was a faithful servant to many of her friends who’s failing health needed a helping hand. She loved time spent with family, especially her lake home in Wisconsin. She loved nothing more than 20 of us packed into the 2 bedroom, 1 bath house. At bedtime it became wall to wall cots, and air mattresses. She would sit and watch the chaos unfold. She also relished the weekends spent in Wisconsin when just Teri and Dennis came by themselves to drive her all around the countryside. Car rides were one of her all-time favorite things to do. We will miss her, but we know it is just for now.
Carole is survived by her eight surviving children. Grandchildren include Ashley (Eric) Brown, Allie (John) Koshak, Nick (Kayleen) Wills, Emma Meyer, Ella Meyer, Matt (Hanna) Plants, Hannah(Noah) Bollinger, Melissa (Jason) Dalton, Leah Keller, Kristin (Chad Prior), Allie (Luke) Morris, Zach Matney, Levi Matney, Tayler Matney, Cassie Matney, Krysta Hartman, Joel (Chelsea) Steckelberg, Becca (Ryan) Anderson, Katelyn (Jacoby) Firkin, Madison (Jordan) Kruger, Grant (Veronica) Schiltz, Tim Schiltz, Noel Steckelberg, Eva Steckelberg, Nora Kalvik . Additionally, Carole had 41(no joke) great grandchildren with 2 new arrivals yet to come. She is also survived by her sister Janice (Jerry) Bradley and their children Ross Bradley, Katie (Jason) Jaskinski and sister inlaw Ruth Matney. She was preceeded in death by her husband Arvin Steckelberg, parents Tom and Betty Sizelove, brother Bob Sizelove, son Mark Steckelberg, grandson Chris Keller, nephew Rick Matney.
