Charles Thompson

Charles Thompson, age 83, of Gladbrook, passed away peacefully late Saturday, May 10th at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown.

Charles was born on July 20, 1941, in Marshalltown to Charles and Winifred (Wickersham) Thompson. He graduated from State Center High School in 1959. Charles served in the U.S. Army from 1963 – 1965. On October 16, 1970 he was united in marriage to Cathy Sue Montgomery Eggers. With this union, he gained a daughter and two sons and later another daughter was born.

Charles worked for Fisher Controls for 33 years. After his retirement, he worked part time for Friday’s Service in Conrad and also for the parks department at Union Grove State Park. Charles was a family man, and he loved the casino and scratch tickets. His hobbies were fishing, gardening, and watching TV including the Young and the Restless and sporting events. He had fond memories of helping on the farm growing up and would always check out all of the crops even while driving down the road. His favorite color was International Harvester red. He was a master pepper player. Charles loved his grandchildren and was always their biggest fan in the stands and in life.

Left to carry on his legacy are: Cathy, his beloved wife of 54 years; daughters, Julie (Bill) Preston of Osage Beach, MO, and Amy (Brad) Cox of Garwin; his daughter-in-law, Tina Eggers of Farmington, MN; his grandchildren Alex (girlfriend, Brodi), Austin (girlfriend, Brooke), and Adam (fiancé, Kelsey) Cox, Mitch and Matt Eggers, Alex Preston, and Alycia (Josh) Jones; great grandchildren, Chloe and Nora Jones and Liam and Jude Preston; siblings, JoAnn (Jerry) Larsen, Ron (Karla) Thompson, and Jeanne Helgerson; sister-in-law, Janie Montgomery; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Charles was preceded in death by his sons, Scott Eggers and Rusty Eggers; his nephew, Ryan Helgerson; his parents, Charles and Winifred Thompson; and his in-laws, Milt and Darlene Montgomery.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2025 at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. also at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Burial will be following the service at Rose Hill Memorial Garden. Memorial donations may be directed to the family.
