Jerry Coughlin

Jerry Lee Coughlin passed away from Alzheimer's disease at 1:30PM on October 26th, 2025. He was 81 years old. Jerry was a lifelong resident of Marshalltown, Iowa. Jerry was an only child, born in Marshalltown Iowa on January 25th, 1944 to his parents, father Francis “Fran” Coughlin and mother Mildred “Nook” (Culbertson) Coughlin. Jerry graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1962, where he enjoyed playing baseball and basketball. Jerry worked his entire life at Arnold’s Motor Supply in Marshalltown. He started working at Arnold’s at age 18 and retired from there at age 62, after 44 years! His father, Fran Coughlin, also retired from Arnold’s Motor Supply. Jerry married his first wife Kay (Momberg)(Coughlin) DeGrado in Marshalltown, Iowa March 25th, 1964. Jerry married his second wife Teresa “Terri” (Hoop) Coughlin in Marshalltown, IA on October 3rd, 1987. They were married for 37 years, but were together for 47 years and they were still together at the time of his passing. Jerry was an active and competitive guy. He played racquetball competitively in the 1970’s. He rode RAGBRAI III & IV in 1975 and 1976 and then again for 6 more years at the age of 60 to 65! He took his family camping for many years where they rode dirt bike motorcycles nearly every weekend. He also played slow pitch softball for many years, but his real love was bowling where he could be seen 3-4 times per week all season long for many years. He continued to bowl regularly all the way up until Alzheimer's robbed him of the ability to continue one of the things he loved to do the most. His Wednesday night bowling buddies got to watch him throw his last ball. Jerry is survived by his wife Teresa Coughlin and his three children Lisa (Kevin) Marks, Patrick (Gabrielle) Coughlin, and Debra Coughlin and her partner Mike Byerly, his six grandchildren, Heather Hupfeld, Natalie Fosdick, Chelbi Coughlin, Tomi DeGrado, Carol Ann Coughlin, Chelsea “Sal” Swanson, and his great grandchildren, Sophie, Brodie, Allena, Olin, Graycen, Hudzen, Hazel, and LJ.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents Francis and Mildred Coughlin and his son in-law Gary Blubaugh.

Funeral services for Jerry will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 beginning at 1:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. A private family burial will take place at Center School Cemetery.
