A visitation will be held on Friday, October 31, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., and a funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, both at Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg, Iowa. Lunch and burial will follow the service.

Opal graduated from Radcliffe High School, finished teacher's training at Central College, and taught in country schools for 4 years before marriage. In 1952, she married Raymond Nelson, and they farmed for many decades in the Saint Anthony, Iowa area. She enjoyed her life as a farm wife, was involved in her church, and cherished her time spent with family and friends.

Survivors include her children: Lola Newgard (Mt. Zion, IL), Loyd (Diane) Nelson (Marshalltown), Daryl (son-in-law) Dudley (Roswell, NM), and Ruth (Doug) Halvorsen (New Providence); 8 grandchildren;19 great grandchildren; brother Floyd Ritland and sister-in-law Marjorie Ritland. Opal was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Nelson; daughter, Rita Dudley; son-in-law, Charles Newgard; grandson, Brett Halvorsen and many brothers and sisters.

Instead of flowers, memorials may be given to Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg, Iowa, or the donor's choice.

Opal's family would like to thank the staff at Hubbard Care Center for her excellent care during the past three years.
