He served with the US Army Reserves unit out of Des Moines.

On March 8, 1969, he was married in Marshalltown to his high school sweetheart Cindy Church. The couple made their home and raised their 3 children in Marshalltown. Tom joined his father at E.F. Mack Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, becoming the fourth generation in the family business founded in 1884. The company handled industrial and commercial projects as well as residential remodeling and repair work. Tom was a registered professional mechanical engineer. He retired in 2009.

Tom was a longtime member of the former First United Methodist Church where he taught Senior High Sunday School and served on the finance committee and as a trustee. In 2023 Tom & Cindy were welcomed into the church family at Hope United Methodist Church.

He enjoyed politics, working on the Marshall County Republican Central Committee and many campaigns, and running as the Republican candidate for IA House District 43 in 2002.

Other activities included serving on the Park and Rec advisory committee, working on the ISU Marshall County Alumni Association & United Way Campaigns, coaching MFL, serving on the MGSA Board, and being chapter advisor for the ISU Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Tom enjoyed golfing and gardening, was an avid outdoorsman, and he looked forward to trips to Canada for fishing and Colorado for elk hunting. Tom and Cindy loved being with family and friends, and spending time together at Bromley Pond. They traveled extensively, but the best trips were to be with their children and beloved grandchildren.
