Sandra Zmolek

Sandra Lucille Zmolek was born on November 19, 1937, in southern Tama county to Edward (Jody) and Gertrude (Duffy) Doyle. She was raised on an Iowa farm, attended a rural grade school near Toledo Iowa, graduating from Toledo High School in 1955.

Following graduation, she was employed by the telephone company in Cedar Rapids and Packaging Corporation of America in Tama.

In 1958 she married her high school sweetheart, Dennis Zmolek at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Tama, Iowa.

Sandra worked for the University of Iowa and the Iowa City school system for a number of years as her husband completed his university studies.

To this union were born four children: Mark, Denise, Mitchell, and Dana. Following Dennis' graduation in 1962 the family moved to Marshalltown until 1969 at which time they moved to Coraopolis, Pennsylvania for her husband career. Returning to Marshalltown in 1975, Sandra was a stay-at-home mother for a number of years, and then was employed by the YMCA and County Extension Service assigned to the 4-H program.

In 1986 she graduated from MCC with an LPN degree which was followed by 15 years as a nurse at Westbrook Acres in Gladbrook.

She was always a ready volunteer and applied her skills in a number of civic organizations, serving as chairman of Hospital Auxiliary board and served in the Med Assist program at the Marshalltown hospital. She served on the board of the House of Compassion as head of the kitchen committee, scheduled food deliveries from supply clients utilizing a team of local volunteers.

As a pass time she enjoyed playing tennis, running in the country side and card with family and friends. She instilled in her children a love for regular exercise, competitive sports and a good healthy lifestyle. Best known as a Pittsburgh Steeler and Iowa Hawkeye fan her loyalty was never questioned.

She was the center of her family, loved dearly by her husband, children, and grandchildren, highly respected and a very good listener. She loved to travel and did extensively in the 1990's. Dennis and Sandra visited a number of countries, making lasting friends from a number of world cultures. Her favorite country was France.

She is survived by her four children, Mark (Nancy) Zmolek of Urbandale, Denise (Tim) Skuster of Salt Lake City, Mitchell Zmolek of Mt. Vernon, and Dana Foster of Dike. Grandchildren: Chelsea Collins, Abby Zmolek, Megan Skuster, Garrett Skuster, Clair Zmolek, Hedy Zmolek, Jaxson Foster, Ellie Foster, Payton Foster.

Great granddaughters: Rainey Blue Skuster, Sloan Collins, and Scarlett Collins. She is also survived by her sister Mary Doyle of Buellton, CA. and a brother Mark (Alice) Doyle of Cedar Rapids as well as many nieces and nephews and other loving family members.

Preceding her in death are her husband, Dennis, three brothers, Dick Doyle, Joe Doyle, and Gene Doyle, a sister-in-law, Carolee Doyle, and granddaughter Sarah Skuster.

Visitation will be held Sunday, May 3, from 5-7pm, followed by a vigil service and chance to share memories at Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. A mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, May 4, at 10:30 am at St Henry's Catholic Church in Marshalltown. Family will present for a visitation at the church starting at 9:45am. If desired, donations may be directed to Iowa River Hospice, St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Marshalltown, or the Marshalltown YMCA.
