Kathy Massa, age 78 of Marshalltown, passed away in the comfort of her own home on Monday, September 21, 2026.
Born Kathleen Anne Laufer on April 13, 1948 in Hinsdale, Illinois, the daughter of Martin H. and Mildred M. (Bode) Laufer. She graduated in the Class of 1966 from Plainfield Community High School. Kathy earned her Bachelor's Degree from Western Illinois University (2000) and her Master's Degree from Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, IA (2002).
On May 31, 1969, Kathy was united in marriage with Michael W. Massa at the Peace Lutheran Church in Plainfield, Illinois.
Kathy and Mike lived in various cities and states for Mike's pastoral roles. Kathy worked as a bookkeeper, computer programmer, computer support specialist, and a true calling as a deacon. She was always active in her churches, especially focused on choir and flute accompaniment. A passion of Kathy's was helping those around her with kindness, sympathy and a listening ear, which drew many people close to her. This was Kathy's bippity boppity boo effect; she would comfort all who she came into contact with.
In 2014 when Mike retired, they journeyed on the road in their RV. For over a decade, they traveled all 50 states and 9 Canadian provinces. The love of camping was the Massa family passion. Kathy cherished bringing their cat along on the adventures. Mike and Kathy had Marshalltown as their home base.
In death, Kathy is reunited with her parents: Martin and Mildred Laufer; and her brother, Philip Laufer. Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Mike; her first son, Martin "Marty" Massa and his wife Renu of Sarasota, FL, and their children: Kilroy Massa, John Massa, Kuiper Massa, Tanya Bhargava, Anika Bhargava; and her second son, Stevan "Steve" Massa and his wife Julie of Marshalltown, and their children: Celeste Willow and her wife Khris, Andy Massa, and Rose/Ray Massa (Rosebud to Oma). As well as Kathy's brother, Ed Ackerman; and sisters: Carol Cordova and Barb King.
In Kathy's last days, she continued to express her love to each family member with a big hug and a whispered, "I love you". Kathy's granddaughter Rosebud believes, Oma would wish everyone a long and happy life.
Per Kathy and her family's wishes, cremation rites have taken place. Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Marshalltown. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 1:00 until 3:00 P.M., prior to service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Iowa River Hospice.
