Larry F. Konicek, age 86, of Garwin, Iowa, passed away on the morning of September 25, 2026 at Southridge Specialty Care in Marshalltown under the care of Care Initiatives Hospice.
Memorial services for Larry will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 beginning at 10:30 A.M. at the St. Francis of Assisi Parish: St. Henry Church in Marshalltown. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Memorials in Larry's name may be directed to his family for a later designation. Larry Fred Konicek was born February 29, 1940 in Tama, Iowa. He was the third of four children born to Fred and Mildred (Papez) Konicek. Larry was raised in Toledo and attended school in the town where he was raised. He was a graduate of Toledo High School Class of 1958.
While attending school, Larry met Judy Chizek and they became high school sweethearts. On May 19, 1959, they were united in marriage at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Tama. They spent their early years making their home in Toledo and starting a family having three children, Mike, RaeLyn and Brad. Out of school Larry began working as a mechanic for Raymond Wrede at Wrede's DX. In 1966, he moved his family to their forever home in Garwin. Over time, Larry bought into the business and, took over and co- owned/operated Larry's DX. After many years, he shut down the business and began work for the Toledo Juvenile Home in maintenance before taking a position at the Garwin High School where he retired in 2005.
Over the years, Larry was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and St. Francis of Assisi Parish St. Henry Church. He took part in participating for many years at the Garwin Volunteer Fire Department and served as a reserve Police Officer in Garwin. In his free time, Larry enjoyed sponsoring and attending stock car races, took trips to the Indy 500, was a proud owner of his 1957 Ranchero and enjoyed woodworking projects. He always looked forward to Sunday so he could get together to drink wine and listen to polka music with his friends. In his younger years, Larry enjoyed spending time outdoors, going hunting and fishing. As he aged, he looked forward to the time spent fishing and camping with his grandchildren.
Those left to remember and cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Judy; his three children, Mike (LeAnn) Konicek, RaeLyn (Jack) Heinrichs and Brad (Pam) Konicek; 11 grandchildren, Nick (Jess) Stein, Amanda (Mark) Richmond, Luke Konicek, Lindsey (Nathan) Bloomquist, Tony (Kacy) Heinrichs, Shelby (Bret) Heinrichs, Alex Heinrichs, Melinda (Joel) Willer, Renae Willer, Britnee (Mark) Oetker and Haylee Konicek; and 16 great-grandchildren. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Colleen (Richard) Steveson; sisters-in-laws, Jan Konicek and Sharry (Jeff) Krouch along with numerous nieces and nephews and many loved extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mildred Konicek; his siblings, Kathleen Crawford and Roger Konicek; and father and mother-in-law, Emil and Rose Chizek.
