Jean Seberg: Marshalltown’s movie star
The IVCCD Orpheum Theater Center is offering an opportunity to learn more about one of Marshalltown’s best-known natives! Born in 1938, Jean Seberg was the daughter of Dorothy and Edward Seberg, and graduated from Marshalltown High School as part of the class of 1956. She was selected from 18,000 candidates worldwide to audition for the lead role in Otto Preminger’s film “Saint Joan,” and went on to make 34 films in the United States and Europe, where she became the muse of the French nouvelle vague (New Wave) filmmakers after starring in Jean-Luc Godard’s ” bout de souffle (Breathless).”
Among Seberg’s films of note are “Bonjour tristesse,” “Lilith,” “Paint Your Wagon” and the experimental French film “Les hautes solitudes.” She was married to Romain Gary, one of the most prominent European novelists of the 20th century. Seberg was also notable for her involvement in political causes and later became a target of the FBI’s infamous COINTELPRO investigations. Seberg died in Paris in 1979 at the age of 40.
The Orpheum Theater annually celebrates the life and career of Jean Seberg at the Jean Seberg International Film Festival, which takes place this year Nov. 21-23. The theme of this year’s festival is “Inspired. Inspiring” and attendees will learn about the film – The Men – and the actor – Marlon Brando – who inspired her to pursue a career in film.
We’ll also be showing “Breathless,” one of the films that established the French New Wave and made Seberg a favorite with European directors. You’ll also see visual art, hear music and experience readings inspired by Seberg.
An exhibit hall features photographs, memorabilia and information about Seberg, her life and career. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Marshalltown’s movie star!
During your visit to the Orpheum, you’ll also be able to walk through our gallery featuring memorabilia, photos, and other information about the many Iowans of stage, screen and television. The Orpheum itself is of interest; it’s a renovated 1940s RKO movie theater that is a classic example of the Art Moderne style of architecture. The building is open to tour Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Our facilities our available to rent for meetings and special events.
