Fortunate to be in community of believers, planners, doers

“Walk with the dreamers, the believers, the courageous, the cheerful, the planners, the doers, the successful people with their heads in the clouds and their feet on the ground. Let their spirit ignite a fire within you to leave this world better than when you found it.” – Wilferd Peterson

When I started my role as the executive director of the Marshalltown Central Business District just more than a year ago, I knew there were going to be challenges to overcome and opportunities for the community to grow, after all it had only been a year since the tornado.

I certainly had no idea that there would be a pandemic that would shut down our businesses, and a second natural disaster that would devastate our entire county.

In the last few weeks since the derecho, I have been amazed at the community outreach and volunteerism. My heart has swelled with pride for Marshall County as people volunteered to help clean up, make ice runs for strangers and feed those who were struggling.

I witnessed business owners provide for the public, when just a few short months ago, the businesses themselves were short on hope because they were shut down due to COVID-19. The people of Marshall County were reaching out and helping others up, and it still continues to happen.

Marshalltown and all of Marshall County, I want you to know that the Marshalltown Community Business District sees you. We see that you have a love for your neighbor, your community and the surrounding. When the trees are cleared, and the roofs patched, let us continue the momentum of fellowship to rebuild and enhance our community.

You have proven not once, but twice, that your feet are on the ground. You hit the ground running, demonstrating that there is a fire within you to help your community.

Many took ownership of their community, and did not wait for someone else to do it. Leadership was demonstrated through compassionate volunteerism, and it has been incredible to witness it unfold.

How fortunate are we to be able to share in a community that is full of dreamers, believers, planners and doers? The battle-tested shoulders of Marshall County residents have proven resilient and strong. The continued courageousness of our people is key in moving us forward; as without courage, no other virtue, such as collaboration, hopefulness, creativity, vision and gratitude can be practiced consistently.

Most will confirm that 2020 has not been what was dreamed of. However there is a perseverance in our community that is fueled by those who dream, plan and do for the future.

The MCBD would like to take this opportunity to say we appreciate those who invest their time, talent and vision to make the community a better place.
