Kids with Down Syndrome deserve to live

Monday was Down Syndrome Awareness Day. In my years as a pastor I have had the privilege to know and work with many of these specially gifted children. I hear a common refrain from their parents: “Little Joey can be a handful sometimes that’s for sure, but he is such a blessing to us and so many others.” I have been blessed by them many, many times.

Sadly, when a Down Syndrome diagnosis is made during pregnancy, seventy percent of these special children are killed and never have a chance to be a blessing. I admit, I am not able to fully grasp the fears and heartache mothers and fathers have when confronted with such a diagnosis. But death is never a good solution to the problems of life.

Are you or someone you know dealing with such a pregnancy? Feel ill-equipped to handle it? There is an alternative — adoption! There are loving parents waiting and willing to adopt Down Syndrome children. The ministry I serve with now, Lutheran Family Service, offers a special program to assist such parents financially and to work with the birth parents. Whether you are pregnant with a Down Syndrome child or would like to become adoptive parents, give us a call at 515-251-4900. A compassionate and non-judgmental person will help.
