Marshalltown High School launches Innovative Family Consumer Science Curriculum
Marshalltown High School (MHS) is excited to announce the adoption of a new Family Consumer Science (FCS) curriculum, offering students an array of hands-on learning opportunities. The new program, which will impact approximately 750 students per year, aims to provide practical life skills and engage a growing number of interested participants. The FCS Department was also welcomed back this fall with newly added and remodeled spaces. This new curriculum, along with the newly added commercial kitchen and newly remodeled residential kitchen and sewing room, creates the opportunity for our students to learn at the highest levels.
The journey to this curriculum adoption began over a year ago, as teachers worked diligently throughout the 2023-24 school year to formulate the necessary criteria. The team evaluated multiple curriculum options, visited other districts to gather insights, and collaborated with FCS consultants to ensure the program aligned with the latest standards and best practices.
The new FCS curriculum at MHS features a diverse range of components. Students will have access to online textbooks and support materials, providing a blend of digital and traditional resources. Additionally, the program boasts the incorporation of RealCare Babies, including versions designed for children with special needs, and the RealCare Pregnancy Profile Simulator, allowing students to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and responsibilities associated with parenthood.
To further enhance the hands-on learning experience, Marshalltown Community School District has invested in 24 Janome Sewist 780DC Sewing Machines. These state-of-the-art machines will enable students to develop their textile and design skills, exploring the art of sewing and fashion creation.
The revamped FCS curriculum is a testament to the district’s commitment to preparing students for the diverse challenges and opportunities they may encounter in their personal and professional lives. By providing a comprehensive and engaging program, MCSD aims to equip its students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to navigate the complexities of adulthood. Applying knowledge through practical experiences helps students develop important skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork.
As the program continues to grow, school administrators and teachers are excited to see the impact it will have on the students. Along with the new sewing room, residential kitchen, and commercial kitchen, these curricular materials will ensure our students are getting a cutting-edge education. With an increase in student interest and the incorporation of cutting-edge technologies and hands-on learning experiences, the new FCS curriculum at MHS promises to be a transformative educational experience.
