Lowering costs for Iowa small businesses and taxpayers

When I’m traveling across Iowa, I’ve had important conversations with Iowans from communities large and small about how we can make life more affordable for our families, farmers, workers, seniors, and small businesses. From health insurance to housing to grocery bills, I’m working with President Trump and my Republican colleagues to lower costs and ensure that Iowans can keep more of their hard-earned money – just the way that it should be. Affordability is a top priority for me as Iowa’s voice in Congress.
One way that we can help Iowans keep more of their paycheck is by making overdue and needed reforms at the IRS and I’m glad to report that President Trump signed legislation I introduced to do just that and hold the IRS accountable to Iowa taxpayers. For too long, the IRS has caused headaches and confusion when a taxpayer makes a fixable mistake on their taxes, providing no explanation as to why a refund is different than expected, or how to correct an error. This law will require the IRS to clearly communicate tax-filing errors to Iowans and help them not only understand the mistake but also challenge it if they see fit. I will continue to work with President Trump to make government more efficient and ensure that the IRS is accountable to Iowa families, farmers, seniors, and small businesses.
I have also backed several bills to support Iowa small businesses, which are the backbone of our Main Streets and keep our communities strong. In Iowa alone, small businesses employ the vast majority of Iowans, delivering good-paying jobs, driving investment in our communities, and powering economic growth across our state’s 99 counties. Ensuring that Iowa small businesses have the resources and support they need to grow and thrive is critical. That’s why I’m glad that, with my strong support, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed many pieces of legislation to support Iowa’s small businesses, including Iowa manufacturing and our rural business community.
We further took action to reduce the costly and immense regulatory burden on our small businesses. These local enterprises – many of which are family-owned-and-operated – face too many regulatory burdens to operate, hire new employees, and make a profit. In fact, under the Biden administration alone, small businesses faced almost $2 trillion in regulatory costs. To help alleviate financial pressures on Main Street, I voted for two bills to reduce costly and burdensome regulations on Iowa small businesses so that we can grow our economy and create good-paying jobs.
Additionally, earlier this year, to support our small businesses, we increased the death tax exemption and made critical tax cuts permanent as part of President Trump’s Working Families Tax Cuts. These provisions will create more economic opportunities and help businesses keep their doors open. In Congress, I’ll keep working with President Trump to create jobs, grow our economy, and stand with our Iowa small businesses.
Finally, as a former volunteer EMT for 15 years in my hometown of Hull, I want all Iowans to have access to high-quality, affordable healthcare. The reality is that too many Iowa families, farmers, seniors, and small businesses can’t afford health insurance and prescription medications. That’s unacceptable. It’s why I’m focused on lowering healthcare premiums, increasing access to affordable insurance, and protecting our rural hospitals. We must do everything possible to lower healthcare costs and ensure that Iowans can receive the care and treatment they need and deserve.
It is an honor and a privilege to represent Iowa in Congress. I take the responsibility of advocating for our communities very seriously, and I will continue to advance policies that lower the cost of living and make life more affordable for all Iowans.
