The Warme Wire: Week 1

This week marked the first week of the 2026 legislative session, and I was grateful to be back at the Capitol in Des Moines representing you. The opening week is always a busy one, filled with speeches from legislative leaders, the Governor, the Chief Justice, and the Adjutant General. It sets the tone for the work ahead, and I’m excited for what I hope will be another productive session on your behalf.

Several messages from this week’s speeches really stuck out to me. In her annual Condition of the Judiciary address, Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Susan Christensen centered her remarks on leadership. She said, “Do what you believe is right, even when it is not popular, and when difficult decisions must be made, explain yourself.” That reminder matters in public service, and it’s something I take seriously as I work to represent you honestly and transparently.

We also heard from Senate President Amy Sinclair on the first day of session. She reflected on moments of bipartisanship in the Senate, noting, “As a body, just last year, over 60% of record votes we took in the Senate were unanimous. Nearly 70% had at least 40 yes votes. We agree far more than we disagree.” That cooperation is important, and it’s encouraging to remember that progress often happens when we focus on what unites us.

The Iowa Legislature is responsible for authorizing all taxes in the state. Just six years ago, our state ranked 43rd in the nation for tax competitiveness, but in November Iowa climbed to 17th overall. The Tax Foundation noted that “Iowa’s…ranking has improved substantially in recent years as the result of several rounds of pro-growth and structurally sound tax reform that have greatly improved the state’s competitive standing.” This progress is encouraging and demonstrates that thoughtful, responsible tax policy can make a real difference for Iowa families and communities. To that end, I have heard your concerns about property taxes, and property tax reform remains a major priority this session.

Another top priority is health. Much of my week was focused on health care policy in my new role as chair of the Senate Health & Human Services Committee. We are celebrating $209 million in federal Rural Health Transformation funds awarded to Iowa and getting to work developing policies that support cancer prevention and screening, reduce administrative burden for the health care workforce, and support youth and families.

We are also celebrating an encouraging public safety milestone. Iowa recorded a record low number of traffic fatalities in 2025, with 259 lives lost, the lowest number since the state began tracking these statistics in 1925. This progress reflects efforts to reduce distracted driving, including last year’s hands-free legislation. It’s a hopeful sign and one that is worth continuing into 2026.

I’ve already had a number of visitors stop by the Capitol this week, and I always appreciate those conversations. If you plan to be at the Capitol, please feel free to email me so we can try to meet. And whether you’re visiting the Capitol or staying closer to home, don’t hesitate to reach out and let me know what’s important to you. I’m here to listen and to be your voice.

Starting at $4.38/week.
