Tax season delivers real relief and certainty for seniors

As we enter tax season, I often hear from seniors that they have been worried about the policy fights here in Washington. After a lifetime in the workforce, raising families, serving their communities, and paying into the system, many retirees are now living on fixed incomes while tackling the cost for groceries, housing, health care, and energy. Seniors deserve results on bringing affordable solutions to the inflationary harms brought by the policies of former President Biden’s economic agenda.

When President Trump returned to the White House, he promised to be a President for all Americans and deliver results – including seniors. President Trump delivered on his promises, through the Working Families Tax Cuts. I am proud to have worked with President Trump on this important piece of legislation, which delivered the largest tax cut in U.S. history, and delivered real relief for our seniors.

At the heart of the Working Families Tax Cuts is a new $6,000 senior tax deduction for individuals 65 and older, or $12,000 for married couples filing jointly. This deduction will be available through 2028 and applies whether seniors itemize or take the standard deduction. It is meant for lower- and middle-income retirees who are hit the hardest by years of Biden-era inherited inflation and rising costs.

The Working Families Tax Cuts protect 88 percent of seniors from paying federal taxes on their Social Security income, ending years of double taxation for retirees who earned those benefits over a lifetime of work. Nearly 33.9 million seniors will be able to qualify, with an average $670 increase in after-tax income per eligible taxpayer. This is real relief for our seniors, who can use this extra money to cover everyday expenses, emergency costs, or simply gain peace of mind.

This legislation also recognizes that every living situation is different, and that many seniors continue working, whether by choice or necessity. Under the Working Families Tax Cuts, seniors who remain in the workforce benefit from making the enhanced standard deduction permanent, no tax on tips, and no tax on overtime pay, ensuring their hard work is rewarded, not penalized.

Just as important as the dollars and cents saved is the certainty this legislation provides. Seniors on fixed incomes need stability, not constant changes to the tax code. By extending lower tax rates and expanding deductions, the Working Families Tax Cuts will give retirees confidence that Washington is working with them, not against them.
