The power of biliteracy for our Bobcats

What does it mean to graduate not only bilingual, but biliterate? In today’s world, that distinction opens doors and our Bobcat students are rising to meet the opportunity.

The Iowa Seal of Biliteracy is an official recognition awarded to high school graduates who demonstrate proficiency in English and at least one additional language. Students earn the Seal by meeting rigorous criteria, including strong performance in English coursework and nationally recognized language proficiency assessments. It is a signal to colleges, employers, and the community that these graduates are prepared to communicate, collaborate, and lead across cultures.

At Marshalltown, our students are embracing this challenge in growing numbers. Class of 2019 was the inaugural for the seal. Fifteen Bobcats graduated with the seal. Today, almost 100 Class of 2026 graduates are set to achieve this honor. This growth reflects not only student dedication, but also a deep commitment from our schools and families working together to build strong language skills from preschool through graduation.

Families play a vital role in this journey. By maintaining and celebrating home languages while supporting English development, families help students build a powerful foundation. Our schools, in turn, provide opportunities through English Learner (EL) services and dual language programming that strengthen both languages over time. This partnership is something worth celebrating as it shows what is possible when schools and families share a common goal.

The benefits of earning the Seal of Biliteracy extend far beyond high school. Biliterate graduates are better prepared for careers in healthcare, education, business, and public service which are fields where communication across languages is increasingly essential. Employers value individuals who can connect with diverse communities, solve problems from multiple perspectives, and navigate a global economy.

There is also a broader impact. Biliteracy fosters understanding, empathy, and inclusion which are all qualities our community needs. When students develop strong skills in more than one language, they are not only gaining an advantage; they are helping to build stronger, more connected communities.

As we look ahead, we are proud of our Bobcats who are leading the way. Their achievements remind us that language is more than communication — it is a bridge to opportunity, connection, and a brighter future for all.
