National Police Week 2026 by Chris Jones

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15th of each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week including that day as National Police Week. National Police Week allows us to honor and remember our fallen law enforcement officers, support their families, and recognize the dedication and service of those who have served and are serving within the profession. For local law enforcement officers, this week offers a moment of reflection on the tremendous public support we have in Marshall County. Throughout my career, I have come to appreciate this time of recognition as an opportunity to remember all of those members who have guided me and helped lead our organization. I have come to appreciate even more the high level of support that other law enforcement officers offer one another. Law enforcement is a demanding profession, both physically and mentally. It is tough on the officers who serve, and even more difficult on the families of those who support their law enforcement professionals.

It takes a special person to be successful in law enforcement. The City of Marshalltown is fortunate to have dedicated and compassionate public safety professionals serving within our community. The men and women of the Marshalltown Police Department strive each day to provide a quality public service. I feel fortunate to work with such a wonderful group of professionals. I want to thank all of the Patrol Officers, Investigators, Police Reserve Officers, and our police department support staff for their service to our community. They all do a wonderful job, and I greatly appreciate all the work that they do for our community.

The Marshalltown Police Department appreciates the close working relationship we have with our area law enforcement partners. Sheriff Joel Phillips and the Deptuties and Jail staff from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office serve our community with dedication and professionalism. The citizens of Marshall County are very fortunate to have such a high-quality, professionally run organization. Additionally, the Marshalltown Police Department values our strong working relationships with other law enforcement agencies throughout Marshall County. Chief Jon Thomas of the State Center Police Department provides valuable public safety services throughout the State Center community. We would also wish to recognize the great group of county Conservation Officers, DNR Officers, the Iowa Department of Public Safety, and our Federal Law Enforcement partners who routinely provide valuable law enforcement services to our community.

The Marshalltown Police Department enjoys tremendous public support. The Marshalltown community does a wonderful job supporting our public safety personnel. The men and women of the Marshalltown Police Department are dedicated to providing our community with high-quality and professional law enforcement services centered on service, pride, and accountability. We appreciate the opportunity to work with community members every day, and we remain committed to collaborating with the community to make Marshalltown a safe place. I am proud to serve alongside the dedicated professionals working in the police department, and they all have my utmost respect.
