Marshalltown Ride Right Committee helps keep RAGBRAI safe and enjoyable for all
As the city of Marshalltown prepares for thousands of RAGBRAI cyclists coming to town on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, riders and citizens safety is the number one goal for our Marshalltown Ride Right Committee. Ride Right is the official bicycle safety program developed by RAGBRAI. The name carries a dual meaning: riders are encouraged to ride on the right side of the road and to ride correctly according to Iowa traffic laws and safe cycling practices.
This group has been working behind the scenes to help ensure riders safety by riding the route, working with local officials for possible road improvements, developing and posting safety signage, and notifying citizens living along the route with possible safety issues for the day.
Because bicyclists in Iowa have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists under Iowa law, understanding and following traffic regulations is a key part of the Ride Right message. However, Ride Right goes beyond legal requirements by providing practical safety tips, riding etiquette guidelines, and educational resources designed specifically for the unique conditions of RAGBRAI.
The committee emphasizes several core principles known as the “Rights” of riding safely. Riders are encouraged to maintain their bicycles in good working condition, especially their brakes, and to wear proper safety gear, including certified helmets and bright, visible clothing. Communication is also key to safety. Riders should signal turns and stops, announce when passing other cyclists, and make intentions clear to those around them.
Safe riding habits are important as well in the Ride Right program. Cyclists are encouraged to ride in a straight line, avoid weaving through traffic, ride to the right to allow passing, and move safely to the shoulder when stopping. RAGBRAI is not a race and patience, awareness, along with courtesy contribute to a safer experience for everyone.
The Ride Right Committee also promotes proper etiquette for riders and citizens who live along the Marshall County route. All are asked to be considerate of fellow cyclists, local residents, volunteers, and motorists sharing the road. Riding single file when appropriate, allowing others to pass, and following directions from both law enforcement and RAGBRAI officials help maintain order and reduce risks during the event.
Since the RAGBRAI route crosses numerous railroad tracks, the committee recommends using safe crossing techniques such as, crossing tracks at a 90-degree angle, use only designated crossings, remove headphones near tracks, and never attempt crossing when warning lights flash or gates are lowered.
The Ride Right Committee also develops and promotes safety and etiquette rules that complement Iowa traffic laws. These guidelines are intended to make RAGBRAI safer and more enjoyable for riders, volunteers, host communities, and support personnel alike. The committee encourages participants to prepare physically before the ride, stay hydrated, remain alert, and avoid alcohol while riding.
Ultimately, the Marshalltown Ride Right Committee’s goal is summed up in its message: Ride Safe. Ride Smart. Ride Right. This helps ensure that RAGBRAI remains one of the most successful and enjoyable bicycle events not only in Marshalltown but in the world!
Help make our Marshalltown RAGBRAI day, July 22nd the safest and best for everyone!
