Bible truth or tradition: More names and titles for God in the Old Testament

The following list is commonly referred to as redemptive names for God as they relate to God’s work on behalf of His people.

YHWH-Jireh: The LORD will provide

“And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together. And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” Genesis‬ ‭22‬:‭7‬-‭8‬, ‭13‬-‭14‬

YHWH-Rapha: The LORD who heals

“saying, “If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, your healer.” Exodus‬ ‭15‬:‭26‬

YHWH-Nissi: The LORD is my banner or victory

“Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord Is My Banner, saying, “A hand upon the throne of the Lord! The Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.” Exodus‬ ‭17‬:‭14‬-‭16‬

YHWH-Shalom: The Lord is peace

“Then Gideon perceived that he was the angel of the Lord. And Gideon said, “Alas, O Lord God! For now I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.” But the Lord said to him, “Peace be to you. Do not fear; you shall not die.” Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord Is Peace. To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites.” Judges‬ ‭6‬:‭22‬-‭24‬

YHWH-Raah (Rohi): The Lord is my shepherd

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” Psalm‬ ‭23‬:‭1‬-‭3‬

YHWH-Tsidkenu: The Lord our righteousness

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.” Jeremiah‬ ‭23‬:‭5‬-‭6‬

YHWH-Shammah: The Lord is there or present

“This is the land that you shall allot as an inheritance among the tribes of Israel, and these are their portions, declares the Lord God. The circumference of the city shall be 18,000 cubits. And the name of the city from that time on shall be, The Lord Is There.” Ezekiel‬ ‭48‬:‭29‬, ‭35‬

YHWH-Sabaoth: The Lord of hosts or heavenly armies

“Now this man used to go up year by year from his city to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of hosts at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests of the Lord.” 1 Samuel‬ ‭1‬:‭3‬

YHWH-Mekoddishkem: The Lord who sanctifies you

“And the Lord said to Moses, “You are to speak to the people of Israel and say, ‘Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you. You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death. Whoever does any work on it, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall be put to death.” Exodus‬ ‭31‬:‭12‬-‭15‬

YHWH-Nisra: The Lord my creator

“For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!” Psalm‬ ‭95‬:‭3‬-‭6‬

El Shaddai; God Almighty

“When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless,” Genesis‬ ‭17‬:‭1‬

“God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples.” Genesis‬ ‭28‬:‭3‬

“And God said to him, “I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come from your own body.” Genesis‬ ‭35‬:‭11‬

“May God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, and may he send back your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.” Genesis‬ ‭43‬:‭14‬

“And Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me,” Genesis‬ ‭48‬:‭3‬

“I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself known to them.” Exodus‬ ‭6‬:‭3‬

“And the sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard as far as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when he speaks.” ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭10‬:‭5‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The Bible also refers to God as “the Almighty” over 40 times with the majority in the book of Job.

El Elyon: Most High God

“And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted my hand to the Lord, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth,”. Genesis‬ ‭14‬:‭18‬-‭20‬, ‭22‬

“They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer.” Psalm‬ ‭78‬:‭35‬

Most High appears many more times by itself.

“I will give to the LORD (YHWH)the thanks due to his righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the LORD (YHWH), the Most High( Elyon).” Psalm‬ ‭7‬:‭17‬

El Olam: God Everlasting

“Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba and called there on the name of the Lord, the Everlasting God.” Genesis‬ ‭21‬:‭33‬

There are hundreds of titles, descriptions and figures of speech in the Bible that describe God’s character and relationship with his people. To name a few: King, Lord, Judge, Savior, Redeemer, Deliverer, Refuge, Father, etc.

As we read and study his word, we see that the God of the Bible has many attributes and characteristics. It is important to know that he does not change and his word will stand forever.

“”For I am the Lord, I do not change;” Malachi 3:6

“The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.” Isaiah‬ ‭40‬;8

“Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven.” Psalms‬ ‭119‬:‭89‬
