Falling in love with a college once is a milestone; falling in love with it twice is proof to its life-long impact. As a proud, twice-graduate of Marshalltown Community College (MCC), my journey there spans two distinct chapters of my life. I first arrived as a young high school graduate, eager to begin my career as a dedicated teacher. Then, twenty years later, I returned to walk through those doors once more. The second time, to enter their exceptional nursing program.

Transitioning from a career in education to healthcare might have seemed like a radical shift to some, but to me, it was a natural evolution. As a teacher, my mission was always to nurture, guide, and support growth; as a nurse, that core purpose remains identical, it simply translates to a different kind of healing environment. MCC honored both versions of my professional self, providing the steppingstones for two completely different callings without ever making me feel like I was starting entirely from scratch.

The skills I honed during my first chapter at MCC became my greatest assets during my clinical rotations. Education taught me how to communicate clearly, breaking down complex instructions so patients could truly understand their diagnoses and care plans. Nursing then added the clinical precision and physical skills required to safeguard their health. Witnessing how perfectly these two paths merged made me realize that MCC hadn’t just given me two separate degrees, it had shaped a holistic, uniquely empathetic approach to patient care that defines who I am today.

It was through this lens of healthcare education that I truly realized what makes MCC’s nursing program so special and transformative. While the workload frequently felt completely overwhelming, the rigorous demands challenged me to expand my existing skillset. The hands-on clinical experiences and deeply supportive instructors taught me far more than basic facts; they pushed me to evolve from an educator into a compassionate, highly skilled caregiver.

Throughout that demanding clinical journey, the combination of financial support, scholarships, and advisor guidance allowed me to prioritize my studies instead of stressing over tuition costs. I connected with MCC so deeply because they paired a high-quality education with total financial relief. It was this dual commitment to academic excellence and student well-being that built the foundation of professional confidence that shaped my entire life.

Ultimately, I fell in love with Marshalltown Community College the first time for what it gave to me, and the second time for what it continues to give. The quality of care I deliver on the clinic floor is a constant reflection of the excellent training I received there, not just once, but twice.

Carrie A. Campbell is a dedicated Registered Nurse and a proud two-time alumna of Marshalltown Community College. After earning an AA in Secondary Education from MCC in 2003, she spent several years serving her community as a Spanish teacher, English as a Second Language teacher, and bilingual caseworker. Driven by a passion for patient advocacy, Carrie returned to her beloved alma mater twenty years later to transition into healthcare, completing her Practical Nursing diploma in 2024 and an Associate Degree in Nursing in 2025. Now working as a Med-Surg Registered Nurse while pursuing her BSN at Morningside University, Carrie credits MCC’s exceptional support and flexible foundation for making her rewarding career pivot possible.
