City council raises taxes

The Marshalltown City Council members will tell you they kept your property taxes at the same rate as previous years. That is correct. They can pat themselves on their collective back, shake hands and smile for the camera.

However, the big picture always provides more information. The city council just raised your property taxes by over one half million dollars annually!

With the formation of the new E911 Commission and its legal authority to tax you directly, it means the city no longer needed to collect over $500,000 in property taxes to cover the city’s share of the E911 expenses for the countywide operation.

The city council refused to lower your tax obligation by the corresponding equal amount it no longer needed to finance. In essence, the city council voted unanimously to raise your property taxes by over $500,000!

Why don’t more people understand this? Why isn’t there more outrage? If Marshalltown was moving forward economically it might be easier to accept the tax increase.

Please ask your elected city council members to explain their decision. Why does the city council need more of your money?
