The Golden Rule

Do we not teach our children about the Golden Rule? Recently, I happened to turn on the TV and Jeopardy was on. The question was “What do you call it when you do unto others as you wish them to do unto you?” Most contestants on this show are intelligent or well-educated young people. Not one of the three contestants came up with the right answer, “The Golden Rule.” No wonder we have people who feel they can do anything to anyone. How would you feel if someone treated you the way you act toward them? The news is full of people treating others badly. Children see all this and are learning that it is OK to yell and disturb meetings; it is OK to have a tantrum if you don’t get your own way. If you don’t agree with someone, call them names, make up stories to destroy their reputations, bully them. We tell our children it is not OK to bully, but then they see otherwise from adults. What are we teaching the next generation? Do you really want your grandchildren living in a world that has no limits on what is acceptable behavior?

Sunday’s paper, Sept.16, had an editorial about the behavior of children in the lower grades in school — that many are so disruptive in the classroom that the teacher cannot teach. Why would we be surprised that is a problem? Children learn by what they see, not necessarily by what they are told by adults who seem to act differently. Let’s all look at our own behavior, let’s not support movies and TV shows that glamorize stupid and bullying behavior. Let’s put God back into our lives and review the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes. Find your Bibles and start reading.
