Sheriff should submit resignation

Many questions have been raised with respect as to how can Sheriff Hoffman effectively perform the rigorous requirements of two full-time jobs. Marshall County residents deserve a full-time dedicated sheriff.

Let’s revisit the timeline of events. Sheriff Hoffman was sworn into office as the Marshall County Sheriff on Jan. 4. The Polk County Supervisors approved the hiring of Hoffman on Feb. 9, with a start date of Feb. 13. The position Hoffman accepted with the Polk County Sheriff Department is one which would require an extensive background review.

It is very reasonable and plausible to assume that Hoffman began the hiring process well before he was sworn in as the Marshall County Sheriff. It is very plausible and reasonable to assume that Hoffman knew that his qualifications made him a very qualified candidate for the Polk County Sheriff position. Knowing the likelihood of being offered the position with Polk County, why did Sheriff Hoffman not begin drafting transition plans for the Marshall County Sheriff Department?

I thank Sheriff Hoffman for his service to Marshall County. However, when Sheriff Hoffman submitted his application for the Polk County Sheriff position, it indicates to me that Sheriff Hoffman no longer has the desire to serve the residents of Marshall County.

I call on Sheriff Hoffman to exercise professionalism and do what is ethically necessary and remove the handcuffs that prevent the county from moving forward and submit his resignation.
