Time to stop the lies

In the article Laura Hollis wrote, “Lies, lies, lies,” it made me think how important it is for us to listen, to have dialogues, if we want to save our democracy.

Let’s be fair and honest in what is being said these days. In one translation of Isaiah 1:18, we read, “Come now. Let us reason says the Lord.”

What does it mean to reason? I am thinking it means to listen carefully to the thoughts and thinking of waht the other person is saying. Right now we are totally polarized and we will not listen to one another.

We cannot have a healthy democracy if we do not listen to one another, and work on the serious problems that keep us from having a democracy.

When voting rights are suppressed in 48 states, we need to speak up. When hate crimes — 7,759 of them — reached a 12-year high in 2020, we need to speak up. When gun violence in 2020 takes nearly 20,000 lives in America, we need to speak up. When an insurrection takes place in our nation’s capitol, we need to speak up.

We better believe that lies from Republicans and lies from Democrats will not produce a healthy democracy.

During World War II, Nazi Germany and their political leaders would tell lies — one after another. They kept this up until the people began to believe those lies. I raise this question — Is the same thing happening here in America?

It is time for Republicans and Democrats to work together to save our democracy and stop our lying.
