America’s moral decline

For the past two to three decades, there has been a great moral decline taking place here in America. We have become blind to moral values and we are reluctant to bring about change. I have written a devotion that I have sent to the Upper Room, in Nashville, Tennessee. In Matthew, chapter 23: verses 23 and 24, we read, and Jesus is speaking and He is very angry, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.”

When my grandson was born, he was born blind with glaucoma. Four days later, he had surgery on his left eye and six days later, he had surgery on his right eye. Each surgery there was excruciating pain. By the time he graduated from high school he had close to thirty eye surgeries.

Our grandson lived with us for two years and attended our Marshalltown Community College. It was small and he was able to get around without too much difficulty. He then went on to the University of Northern Iowa. He fell in love with a sighted girl. He went on to law school, got married, works for the IRS, and he now has two children.

I marvel how my grandson has not been blind to moral values in his life. I have to ask God to help me, again and again, not to be blind to matters of justice, mercy and faith. Pope Francis, in speaking to our U. S. Congress a few years ago, said, “It laments me, the blood money that we make off of war products.”

How many times have I been blind to moral values in my life? God help me to become a better person! I need the love of Jesus in my life, like my grandson. When I pray the Lord’s prayer, don’t let me go blind to what I am saying. “Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.”

Helen Keller once said, “The only thing worse than being blind, is having your sight and no vision.” Yes, Jesus, open up our eyes and open up our hearts. Don’t let us go blind with a lack of your love in our world.
