Feenstra: Helps or hinders?

On March 17, Congressman Randy Feenstra of District 4 Iowa filed for reelection. With Governor Reynolds at his side, Congressman Feenstra proudly announced his “Save Our Seniors Act.” This is approximately the 609th bill he’s introduced, none of which he’s passed. The “SOSA” bill doesn’t save, protect, or boost security. The bill’s purpose is to simply show us what we already know. Since Congressional Republicans are unwilling to raise the cap on taxable income for the rich or put back the money Reagan and Bush II took out of Social Security, it will run out of money in eight years. On March 20, Feenstra along with 170 other Republicans, released a budget proposing raising the social security retirement age. Does he help or hinder District 4?

Working against funds for Iowa District 4 is a habit for Congressman Feenstra. According to Laura Belin’s Bleeding Heartland, “Feenstra’s stance on earmarks costs his district millions” Monday, Dec. 26, 2022, issue, all the other Iowa lawmakers have raked in millions for their districts from the Omnibus Budget Bill. For instance: $7 million for the Alburnett Road Extension in Marion — Hinson request 2023; $7 million to design a new passenger terminal for the Des Moines International Airport– Axne request 2023; and $45.1 million for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Construction Upper Mississippi River project — Miller-Meeks requested $22.5 million 2022. Over two years $144 million of your taxpayer dollars went to improve Iowa EXCEPT in District 4 because Feenstra hasn’t turned in any earmarks for projects in District 4.

Iowa’s roads, bridges and drinking water are in sore need of repair, yet Congressman Feenstra voted against the Nov. 6, 2021, Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal. Despite his vote, District 4 reaped the rewards in infrastructure.

The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. Feenstra doesn’t pass bills, and he doesn’t bring taxpayer money into District 4.

We have another choice. Ryan Melton. Ryan has been traveling District 4 since January 2022 meeting people and listening to their concerns. I met him at Wayward Social. He’s bright and is grounded in Midwestern values. Check out his website and try to catch one of his meet and greets. Voting for Feenstra won’t improve our roads or bridges, or quality of life in Iowa. He has shown that through his votes, but Melton knows the value of supporting Iowans.
