Let’s stand together for Marshalltown

In the heart of Marshalltonians, a spirit of unity and shared responsibility has long been the fabric of our community. Recently it has started to feel like that spirit has wavered, but as members of this town, it’s crucial we uphold these values, especially as we face decisions that will shape our future. On March 5, we have two ballot issues before us, the city’s renewal of the 1% Local Option Sales and Service Tax (LOSST) and the school district’s Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL). These represent more than fiscal measures; they are a reaffirmation of our commitment to each other and to the generations that will follow.

For two decades, LOSST has reduced the tax burden on property owners by sharing it with consumers in Marshalltown. Also, it has funded essential projects that benefit us all. From improving our roads, enhancing public safety, and recovering from disaster, LOSST has helped Marshalltown remain a place we choose to live and that we’re proud to call home. Renewing this tax isn’t just about maintaining the status quo; it’s about continuing to invest in our community’s prosperity and ensuring our city can meet the future’s challenges head-on.

Similarly, the PPEL is a testament of our dedication to education and our children’s future. Many of our school buildings are overdue for maintenance and improvements. Investing with PPEL means providing safe, modern, and conducive learning environments for our students. It’s an investment in our children’s future and, by extension, the future of Marshalltown.

Some may question the timing or necessity of these measures, especially in uncertain times. However, it is precisely during such times that our community values are tested, and we must rise to the occasion. Supporting LOSST and PPEL is not merely a financial decision; it’s a declaration of our belief in Marshalltown’s resilience and potential.

As we consider our choices at the ballot box, let’s remember the value of community that has long been our strength. Renewing LOSST and investing with PPEL are not just votes for taxes; they are votes for our town’s future, our children’s education, and our unwavering commitment to the community of which we are all members.

Let’s stand together for Marshalltown, for our community, and for the bright future we all believe in and work towards. Vote Yes in favor of LOSST and PPEL.
