Our cooperative is strong!

Dear friends of the Village Coop of Marshalltown,

The Des Moines Register recently published an article regarding the failure of a number of cooperative projects in Iowa. This article referred to a competitor of ours based in Pella that is associated with cooperatives all over the state of Iowa, and elsewhere. We at the Village Coop of Marshalltown are reaching out to future Coop members to ease any concerns you may have about the Village Cooperative of Marshalltown.

It has been nearly 14 years since the opening of the Village Cooperative of Marshalltown. Our finances are in very good shape and audited annually with a grade of “outstanding”. We have no outside investors, and we have no debt other than our federally insured mortgage at a very attractive interest rate. We maintain adequate reserves to keep our building in top condition. Our ownership consists of our residents (50 shares). We are an independent entity from other Cooperatives and operate under the direction of a Board of Directors elected from our membership. This has proven to be very beneficial and thanks to long-range planning of the owners/members. Many of our members also play an active role in participating in one or more of our committees.

As future Coop members on our wait list, you are already aware that we have recently experienced an uptick in units becoming available. Unusual, but attributed to several residents needing assisted living care or more, which we do not provide. Our Coop consists of 62+ years active independent seniors. Several of our residents have been here since opening day.

If you have more questions about cooperative living in Marshalltown, would like to come for another tour, or just make plans to come to our weekly coffee on Tuesday or Thursday, please call Teresa McCall at 641-752-4411 between 8 am and noon, Monday through Friday. Her email address is marshalltown@theaapg.com.

Thank you and we look forward to you becoming a member of our Marshalltown Coop family!
