Why support funding for the MACC?

In Greg Nichols’ T-R March 17 editorial, he discussed the role of government in forming a community.

The Marshalltown City Council has a duty to support and encourage assets to Marshalltown. Mr. Nichols stated, “I value the contributions of the Fisher family and appreciate how they have supported the community and arts for several generations. Their history is an essential part of who we are as a community. This is a part of who we are.”

I agree! The Fisher Community Center is essential. For many years, our city has supported the

Fisher Community Center (now MACC). The Marshalltown Community has shown by their financial support of MACC that they believe this is essential.

The City of Marshalltown must continue their support. Cities are more than brick and mortar. Cities need culture and recreation and beauty. Cities help provide parks, recreational trails, and art in city buildings.

There is a statue outside the new police and fire station because it adds beauty. Adding beauty is an essential part of government functions. The statue in front of the police and fire station was not a waste of government funds. It stands for amenities that cities must provide.

Without arts, recreation and culture, who will want to come to Marshalltown? Please vote to reconsider funding for MACC.
