Eat taco pizza and take action this Earth Day

When many people think of Iowa, the first things that come to mind are probably corn, taco pizza, and an endless thirst for Busch Light. But as we celebrate Earth Day on Monday, April 22, it’s time to add another item to that list: the remarkable resilience and creativity of Iowans in the face of climate challenges.

Last year, we watched our lush fields transform into cracked, dusty earth. As of mid-April, even after a few showers, a staggering 85% of the state is still feeling the effects of the drought. Since we began measuring temperatures, the ten warmest years on the planet occurred in the past decade, and exacerbated our weather woes.

But here’s where the spirit of Iowa has a chance to shine. In the face of adversity, we’ve always been innovators. From our pioneering spirit in agriculture and engineering, to our dedication to community, Iowans have a long history of finding creative solutions to tough problems.

Take renewable energy, for example. Iowa leads the nation in wind energy production, harnessing the power of our breezy plains. And with our vast potential for solar, we’re tapping into the sun’s abundant resources to power our homes, farms, and businesses. It’s a testament to our ingenuity and commitment to a brighter, greener future.

Every day, ordinary Iowans are also doing their part to reduce their carbon footprint and protect our planet. Whether it’s planting a garden, biking to work, or supporting local businesses, we’re all finding creative ways to live more sustainably.

So this Earth Day, let’s harness the resilience that defines Iowa. It’s time to turn our care and concern into action. Let’s innovate, adapt, and lead the way towards a healthier, more sustainable planet, starting in our communities.

Together, we can make a difference. Whether it’s planting trees, advocating for renewable energy, or supporting local sustainability initiatives, each of us has a role to play in building a brighter future.

And as we take meaningful steps, let’s also take a moment to savor the unique flavors of Iowa. I’ll be celebrating this Earth Day with taco pizza, not just as a meal, but as a celebration of Iowans’ creativity and good sense — a reminder of the ingenuity and resourcefulness that will guide us toward a greener tomorrow.
