A valley full of dry bones

There are many lovely stories in the Bible. In the book of Ezekiel, this priest was ordained to take a message to the kings, leaders and those speaking false words from God. Ezekiel, Jeremiah and Isaiah were contemporary preachers who God used to bring this message to a very sinful nation. He has promised His people that destruction is coming because they refused to repent and change. Northern Israel had already fallen and is amid the “dry bones.” in this scripture. You can compare Israel to America today. Israel promised to be faithful to God in the Old Testament. In the New Testament America promised to be faithful by accepting the Messiah who Israel rejected as the Son of God. Both nations failed to succeed. God called Ezekiel to come and look at a vision He had created. What do you see, God asked? I see a valley full of dry bones! A second question was asked, do you think these bones can live again? To the preacher’s credit he did not speculate, he merely said, “(only) you know God.” If God could create the universe with living creatures, these bones could certainly live again: but God was merely wanting Ezekiel to know that the “living-again promise” only meant that it would happen in two ways: (1.) Israel could be reborn as a Nation (that happened in 1948) (2) and believers could be resurrected in Eternity. If repentance could happen, they would live forever. Elijah needed to believe that God had control over all matters of life and death. In vs. 37:5 God tells Elijah to breathe life back into these bones! This is a promise that the true words Elijah preached did ignite new life in Israel. Since Israel was reborn as a nation, those “once dry bones” reveal to the world that God is sovereign over the living and the dead. Now that Israel lives again can they be his people in faith? The immediate question is, what about we Christians? Is our faith strong and embedded in the life of Christ? We have the same promise in that we will live in eternity because of our belief in Jesus and our faith in the Christian cause.
