Urging Congress to prioritize PBM reform
As a Certified Dementia Practitioner helping provide education and support to the metro, I see firsthand the challenges faced by adults and families dealing with dementia and memory loss. My passion lies in providing the best possible care and resources for these individuals and their caregivers. Unfortunately, the current system, dominated by Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs), presents significant obstacles to this mission.
PBMs, the intermediaries between insurers, drug manufacturers, and pharmacies, wield immense power over the availability and pricing of prescriptions. Their profit-driven practices often put patients’ needs last, creating barriers that can be insurmountable for those already facing serious health challenges.
Without meaningful PBM reform, the burden on our older adults and their caregivers will only grow. Innovative treatments, which offer hope and improved quality of life, should remain accessible without unnecessary hurdles. Caregivers, who are already stretched thin, should not have to fight against a system that is currently designed to maximize profits at the expense of patient care.
I urge Congress to prioritize PBM reform. Lawmakers must address the practices that allow PBMs to prioritize profits over people. Our seniors deserve a healthcare system that truly works for them, ensuring they can receive the treatments they need without undue stress and financial strain.
It’s time for our legislators to take a stand and ensure that the health and well-being of our most vulnerable populations are protected. Our seniors cannot afford to wait any longer.
