For better election oversight, vote Joel Oliva
Voting should be easy, and polling locations should be consistent to reduce confusion for voters. Reported in the Times-Republican on April 25, the 3rd Ward voting location was changed to Our Savior Lutheran Church. 3rd Ward voters have historically known to vote at the MACC (formerly known as the Fisher Community Center).
Marshall County Auditor Nan Benson was quoted saying “a lot of politics” is involved with the change. The rental cost of $1,800 in tax dollars for use of the MACC was the reason for changing locations in the 3rd Ward but in the 4th Ward, a contrary reason was used to remain at its location.
In the T-R two weeks later, Benson announced her intentions to spend over $2,000 in tax dollars on a new ADA compliant door for Redeemer Lutheran Church, which is the 4th Ward polling location. This would bring the 4th Ward site in compliance with federal laws. Benson said she didn’t want to move locations as the location had become familiar to 4th Ward residents.
Familiarity for voters works for 4th Ward voters but is not considered for 3rd Ward voters? It is certainly arguable that paying $2,000 for a church’s door with taxpayer dollars is unethical.
Oversight and a change of Auditor is needed. Fortunately we have the opportunity to vote for Joel Oliva for Auditor/Recorder. He will take “a lot of politics” out of conducting elections with integrity. Oliva has the experience in cyber security to protect our Marshall County elections from future bad actors. His project management work with attention to detail will be needed to keep up with the routine changes in election and real estate laws to ensure Marshall County in compliance with the laws. Vote for change, vote Joel Oliva for Auditor/Recorder!
