SCOTUS was right to overrule Chevron Doctrine

This year, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a major blow to the federal bureaucracy.

On June 28, a 6-3 majority of the Court issued a landmark opinion overruling the Chevron Doctrine. For decades, due to the Chevron Doctrine, federal courts deferred to federal agencies when ambiguous provisions of a law were in question. Instead, courts empowered unelected bureaucrats to decide how to implement laws – including burdensome rules and regulations – when there was a lack of clear, legislative guidance. This precedent – now struck down – was abused and gave an incredible amount of power to the administrative state while leaving Iowa families, farmers, and businesses in the dust.

A bloated government bureaucracy with unchecked power holds our entrepreneurs, farmers, businesses, and economy back. From WOTUS regulations to electric-vehicle mandates, unelected bureaucrats have imposed their will and overstepped their authority for far too long. Government bureaucracy also silences the voices of those whose voices should be the loudest in our representative system of government – the American people.

Fortunately, the Supreme Court’s decision rightfully returns power back to lawmakers elected and held accountable by the American people, restores balance to our system of government, and prioritizes local control over federal overreach.

In Congress, I’ve also worked to hold the Biden-Harris administration accountable. I voted to overturn President Biden’s expansive WOTUS rule, which punishes farmers for even having a puddle on their property after a big rain and regulates everything from ponds and cricks. Additionally, I’ve led the charge against the Biden administration’s costly and unrealistic electric-vehicle mandates on cars, trucks, tractors, semis, and buses. Iowans should be able to decide what kind of car or truck they want to drive – not the federal government.

I once again applaud this decision that keeps the administrative state in check and will continue to be a strong voice for Iowa families, farmers, and businesses in Congress.
